HSE Requirements for LEV Testing in 2025: What You Need to Know

As 2026 approaches, businesses across the UK must ensure their Local Exhaust Ventilation

(LEV) systems meet the latest Health and Safety Executive (HSE) requirements. Proper LEV

testing isn’t just a best practice — it’s a legal duty under the Control of Substances

Hazardous to Health Regulations (COSHH). In this guide, we’ll explain what the HSE expects,

how often testing should take place, and what you can do to stay compliant and protect your

workforce.

What the HSE Says About LEV Testing

The HSE requires all LEV systems that control dust, fumes, vapours or other airborne

contaminants to undergo a Thorough Examination and Test; at regular intervals —

typically at least once every 14 months. This examination checks airflow rates, filters, fans,

ductwork, emission control, and overall protection. Reports must be kept for at least five

years.

Frequency of LEV Testing — The 14-Month Rule

According to HSG258, most systems must be tested every 14 months. Some, like shot-

blasting, grinding or toxic fume systems, require testing every 6 months. Wood dust

extraction systems typically need testing every 12 months. Missing a test risks HSE

enforcement or prosecution.

What’s New or Emphasised in 2025

While core regulations remain stable, HSE now emphasises improved documentation,

qualified examiners (BOHS P601), proactive maintenance, and digital record-keeping.

How to Stay Compliant

To stay compliant: 1) Book thorough examinations every 14 months, 2) Keep reports 5+

years, 3) Act on recommendations, 4) Maintain systems regularly, and 5) Train staff to spot

faults.
